West Hills edged by Gavilan at home

West Hills College Coalinga sophomore Tyrell Edwards scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Falcons in a narrow 84-83 loss to visiting Gavilan College on Saturday.

The Falcons led 36-32 at halftime but couldn't hang on for the victory.

Edwards shot 9 of 13 from the field, including a pair of three-pointers on his way to tying his career high in points.

Sophomore Jabari Merritt had another big game, posting his fifth straight double-double of the season with 20 points and 16 rebounds. He also added 7 assists, 2 steals, and a pair of blocked shots. Merritt's 19.9 points per game currently rank 12th in the state while his 12.0 rebounds per game are fifth.

Brian Rice put up his first double-double of the year, contributing 10 points and 11 rebounds while Khyree Reese came off the bench to total 13 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals.

West Hills fell to 2-5 overall. The Falcons are back in action on Thursday (Dec. 2) when they will compete at the three-day Coach Tregs Classic at College of the Redwoods in Eureka. WHCC opens up against host Redwoods at 6 p.m.
