Falcons off to rough start at Chabot Tournament

It was a tough weekend for the West Hills College Coalinga men's basketball team. The Falcons weren't able to come home from Hayward with a win and suffered three losses at the Chabot Classic.

West Hills opened the tournament on Thursday with a 79-66 loss to Gavilan College, fell 83-68 to Shasta College on Friday, and closed the event with a 99-62 setback to Alameda College.

Freshman guard Fredery Cuello led the Falcons' offense at the tourney, averaging 16 points over the three contests.

Cuello poured in a game-high 20 points in the West Hills loss to Gavilan. The Falcons trailed 38-31 at halftime and couldn't complete the come back in the second half.

Cuello added 4 assists and a pair of steals. Trevin Levy chipped in with 13 points while BenQuon Elder totaled 3 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals.

Elder had the big game offensively for the Falcons in Friday's contest. He posted 17 points to go along with 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. Elder shot a perfect 5-for-5 from three-point range, part of 13 three-point shots made by the Falcons.

West Hills also got double-digit scoring from Cuello (14 points) and Levy (11 points). Off the bench, Shakir Doss scored 9 points and Noah Eagle contributed 8 points.

The tournament concluded on Saturday with the loss to Alameda. The Cougars led 45-26 at halftime and continued to pour it on, scoring 54 points over the final 20 minutes.

Levy led the Falcons with 16 points as he sank 4 three-pointers. Elder added 15 points and 5 rebounds while Cuello scored 14 points for the second consecutive game and added a team-best 6 rebounds. And Derrick Barnes dished out a team-high 8 assists to go with 2 points and 3 rebounds.

West Hills, now 0-4 overall, will look to earn its first win of the season when it returns to the court on Saturday (Nov. 16). The Falcons host Cuesta College at 6 p.m. in their home opener.
