It took nearly two years for the West Hills College Coalinga football team to makes its return to the field. And when it came time to finally play, the Falcons had to endure three more delays to their season opener. Facing live competition for the first time could have been considered a victory in itself but on the field, visiting Chabot College ruined the afternoon by handing West HIlls a 28-16 defeat on Saturday at the Memorial Bowl.

West Hills quarterback Jaice Holt threw for 247 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 21 of 34 passing to pace the offense but the Falcons defense couldn't stop a pair of long touchdown drives in the second half that would prove to be the difference in the game.

Trailing 7-0 in the first quarter, the Falcons put themselves in good position to tie up the game. West Hills had first down on Chabot's three-yard line but had to settle for a 27-yard Tristan Valle field goal.

Chabot jumped ahead 14-3 with a 43-yard TD pass from LT Beck to Jamal Lavallier with 11 minutes to play in the second quarter. But the Falcons were able to grind out a nine-play, 61-yard drive that resulted in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Holt to Jaredd Matchett with 34 seconds left in the second. West Hills couldn't convert the PAT kick and went into the locker room trailing 14-9 at halftime.

The Falcons would get no closer. Chabot put together a 12-play, 80-yard TD drive late in the third quarter and added a 10-play, 64-yard scoring drive to go ahead 28-9 with 6:53 left in the fourth.

Holt led West Hills on a final scoring strike. His 17-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Tryon with 2:47 left to play closed out the scoring for both teams. Tryon led Hawks receivers with nine receptions for 92 yards.

Chabot, playing in its fourth game of the season, improved to 2-2 overall.

West Hills (0-1) will look for its first win next Saturday (Oct. 2) when the Hawks travel to College of the Siskiyous in Weed. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Siskiyous is off to an 0-4 start this season.
