West Hills College Coalinga totaled a season-high 479 yards of offense but the Falcons couldn't hang on to a third-quarter lead and suffered a 38-31 loss to visiting Chabot College on Friday at Memorial Stadium.

Trailing Chabot (3-2) 21-17 after two quarters, the Falcons took the opening drive of the second half 69 yards over six plays and jumped ahead on William Weinmann's 20-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Murphy. West Hills held a narrow 24-21 advantage at the 12:06 mark in the third quarter.

But that lead didn't last long. Two plays after the ensuing kickoff, Chabot quarterback Chayce Akaka connected with receiver Alan Riggins for a huge 61-yard TD that put the Gladiators ahead for good.

Akaka tossed a 30-yard touchdown to Janiero Crankfield with 6:36 to go in the third to extend the Chabot lead to 35-24.

The Falcons followed that up by grinding out a 15-play, 79-yard drive that took nearly eight minutes off the clock. Weinmann ran in from seven yards out for a touchdown at the 13:47 mark in the fourth to get West Hills within four points at 35-31.

The Falcons would get no closer. Chabot got a 31-yard field goal from Alejandro Cervantes with 2:17 to play to seal its victory.

West Hills used a balanced attack to stay in the contest. Of the 479 yards, 254 yards came by passing and 225 were on the the ground. Dwan James was the Falcons top rusher as he ran for 165 yards on 30 carries.

Weinmann had an efficient game, completing 23 of 29 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns. Cannon Eames led the Falcon receivers with six catches for 88 yards. Joshua Robinson also caught six passes for 60 yards, including a 38-yard TD. Presti Conti hauled in an eight-yard touchdown from Weinmann as part of his four reception, 28-yard day.

James Carter led the defense with six total tackles.

West Hills (0-5) has a bye next week and will head into its Valley League opener on Oct. 19 at Sacramento City College still in search of its first win. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at SCC's Hughes Stadium.
