It was a rough way to start the 2019 football season for West Hills College Coalinga. Playing at Diablo Valley College's Viking Stadium on Friday, the Falcons fell 49-26 in both teams' season-opener.

With the score tied 7-7 after the first quarter, the Vikings rallied to score four unanswered touchdowns to effectively put the game out of reach and take a commanding 35-7 lead midway through the third quarter.

Down 7-0, Dwan James broke free for a 39-yard touchdown run to get the Falcons on the board at the 4:17 mark in the first quarter.

But the momentum shifted back to the DVC side of the field. A 69-yard interception return for a touchdown by the Vikings started their run of 28 straight points. Diablo Valley led 21-7 at halftime and took advantage of two West Hills turnovers to punch in two more touchdowns.

The Falcons finally snapped the Vikings' streak when Tristan Eames ran in from nine yards with 5:39 to play in the third quarter to cap a nine-play, 49-yard drive. Andrew Davis broke off a huge 77-yard TD run at the 10:34 mark in the fourth and Ramon Ortega closed out the Falcons' scoring with a three-yard touchdown run with 30 seconds left to play.

Despite the final score, the Falcons had success on the ground collecting 237 yards rushing. James led the way with 106 yards on 13 carries while Davis added 86 yards on four attempts.

Quarterback William Weinmann had a tough time getting in a rhythm and completed just 4-of-12 passes for 55 yards with two interceptions. Joshua Robinson was the leading receiver with one catch for 37 yards.

Joel Galvan and Dashawn Holliman both had six tackles each to lead the West Hills defense.

West Hills will look to get in the win column on Saturday (Sep. 14) when the Falcons host Shasta College in their home opener at 1 p.m.
