Falcons fall in season opener at Cabrillo

The 2020 season opener for the West Hills College Coalinga baseball team didn't go as planned. Four different Cabrillo College pitchers held the Falcons scoreless as they suffered a 4-0 loss on the road in Aptos on Friday.

The Falcons will host Cabrillo in a doubleheader on Saturday (Jan. 25) starting at 11 a.m. to close out the three-game season-opening series between the two squads.

West Hills outhit Cabrillo by a 7-6 margin on Friday but couldn't push across any runs as the Falcons left seven runners on base. The Falcons' best chance to score came in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Kameron Washington-Bryant doubled and moved to third base on a single by Logan Weatherby. But Cabrillo starting pitcher Clayton Ray struck out Zac McDaniel to end the threat and inning.

Washington-Bryant and Weatherby both went 2 for 4 to lead West Hills at the plate. Koki Fukui, Isaiah Clarke, and Bennett Hergenroeder all added singles.

Ray earned the win for Cabrillo, tossing six scoreless innings. He scattered six hits and struck out six.

Seth Goodrich pitched well in the opening-day start for the Falcons despite getting saddled with the loss. He allowed three runs and five hits over five innings. He struck out one and walked none. Subaru Oshima allowed one run over the final three innings to close out the game.
