Falcons Split DH with El Camino Compton; Open Conference Play on Tuesday vs. Taft

The Falcons came away with a split in Saturday's DH vs. El Camino Compton College. Despite being in control for both games, bullpen struggles ended up costing the Falcons in Game 1. Chad Gotto got the ball and was his normal "highly-effective" self as he threw six innings of shutout baseball. Spencer Hammond came in out of the bullpen, even though he normally starts, so that he could get some work in before his start next week. He struggled and ended up giving up 6 earned runs in 1.2 innnings pitched. Despite that, Coach Stefan McGovern handed the ball to Danny Perez with two runners on base and an 8-6 lead with two outs in the 8th, and Perez escaped the jam by inducing a flyout to right field.

Still leading 8-6, McGovern chose to stick with Perez and he quickly got the first two hitters out. Then Perez gave up back to back solo home runs and the lead. With two outs, El Camino Compton reached first base safely on a drag bunt and then advanced to 2nd on a passed ball. An RBI single to center gave the Tartars the win. El Camino Compton was down eight runs in the bottom of the 7th, but scored 9 runs in the final three innings to get the victory.

In Game 2, the Falcons wasted no time getting on the board as they scored 4 runs in the first inning. Cody Lorenzini started for the Falcons, and was very effective going 5 innings and allowing two runs. The bullpen was much better in this game, as Matt Siedem threw two scoreless innings, and Brian Perales closed out the game with two innings of his own.

Brandon Hernandez provided the offensive spark for the Falcons, as he collected 4 hits in both games and 7 RBI's. He also stole three bases. With the split, the Falcons improve their record to 19-15. WHCC will host Taft this Tuesday at Keith Scrivner Field @ 2pm. The Falcons currently hold a 8-7 record in conference, and are just two games back of a playoff spot.
