Falcons Avoid 9th Inning Collapse, Hold On vs. Porterville for 9-8 Victory

Porterville, CA – Head coach Stefan McGovern and the West Hills College baseball team improved its conference record to 5-5 on Tuesday with a 9-8 win over Porterville College. The Falcons are coming off a 10-4 victory over #9 Fresno City.

Cody Lorenzini (1-2) took the ball for West Hills to start the day. Despite Lorenzini not having his best stuff, he was able to limit the damage in some big innings and get his first collegiate victory. Lorenzini allowed four runs and three walks in his five innings of work.
The Porterville offense was able to capitalize on WHCC fielding mistakes and jump to an early lead in the ballgame. The Pirates scored its first runs of the game when a bases loaded error on behalf of the Falcons brought in two runs. A fielder's choice then drove in the third Pirate run of the inning. In the second inning a one out Falcon error started another Porterville rally. A passed ball followed by a sacrifice fly to center field plated Porterville's fourth run.
Matt Siedem got the Falcons offense started with a leadoff single to begin the third inning. A bunted ball from Scotty Ingle drove in the first Falcon run of the day when an airmailed throw from the Pirates sailed to right field. Jake Lorenzini followed Ingle's lead and placed another bunt down the third base line that wound up in right field. A walk to Brandon Barker brought Alante Uribe to the plate with runners at the corners. Uribe roped a two RBI double to the left-center gap to cap off a four run running.
Brian Perales was first out of the bullpen for coach McGovern and the Falcons. Perales worked efficiently and allowed one run in his three innings of work. The Falcons were able to take its first lead of the game in the fifth inning. It was Brandon Hernandez getting things started with a single back up the middle. A hit by pitch to Torin Miller followed by a Jeff Torres single loaded the bases for West Hills third baseman Danny Perez.  Perez drove in two more runs with a double down the right field line.
In the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings West Hills was able to bring in some much needed insurance runs. A Pirate error in the sixth inning set up Lorenzini to bring in Ingle with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Perez followed up with his third RBI of the day with another base knock up the middle to plate another WHCC run. Lorenizni then entered the box again in the eighth inning and placed a double down the left field line to score Ingle. Ingle was able come across the plate three times in the ballgame.

The Falcons got two quick outs in the bottom of the 9th and it looked like a for sure Falcon victory. Three walks, a two RBI single and a hit by pitch soon changed that. WHCC called to Fernando Ramirez to prevent a Pirate ninth inning comeback. Ramirez entered the game with bases loaded and two outs. A first pitch hit by pitch then made it a one run ballgame still in favor of West Hills. On a 3-1 count, Ramirez was able to induce a pop-up to the shortstop, which ended the game and made the score final at:
