Falcons 9th Inning Rally Falls Short as They Lose Heartbreaker to Rams 7-6

The Falcons were unable to get their first win of the 2017 season on Tuesday, as they fell to Gavilan College 7-6. The Falcons were ahead much of the game, but three big run producing hits from the Rams gave them the edge in the victory.

The Falcons plated a run in the first as Trent Bollman hit his first home run of the season with two outs. It was the first home run by any Falcon hitter this season. In the second inning, Torin Miller reached on a base on balls, and was brought home with two outs on a RBI single by Scotty Ingle to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Falcons.

Brandon Barker got the start for West Hills College, in his first pitching performance of the season. He did not disappoint early as he shutout the Rams during his first three innings of work. In the 4th, he gave up a leadoff walk, a single, and a double which tied the score at 2-2, and the Falcons lost the lead on a RBI groundout.

The Falcons showed great fight though as they answered back immediately in their half of the fifth. After getting two quick outs, Isaiah Daniel walked and was moved to second following a single by Brandon Hernandez. Evan Richards came up big for the Falcons as he singled to right, which was then misplayed by the Rams outfield, which allowed both Daniel and Hernandez to score, giving the Falcons back the lead 4-3.

Reliever Matt Siedem came in to give two innings of great relief, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the 7th. After getting the first two outs, Siedem gave up back to back walks and then the Rams got a huge double from Brendan Wilson, which scored both runners, and gave the Rams the lead 5-4. In the bottom of the 8th, Rams first baseman Josh Tonascia connected for a two run homer off reliever Josh Odahl, which proved to be significant insurance runs.

Down 7-4 in the top of the ninth, Torin Miller reached on an error. Jake Lorenzini and Jeff Torres both singled to left, loading the bases for Scotty Ingle with no outs. Ingle grounded into a fielder's choice, which plated one run with one out. After a RBI single by Hernandez, the Falcons were down only one run with runners on first and second and two outs. Evan Richards worked the count to full, but Hernandez was picked off of first in an attempt to advance on a passed ball, which ended the game.

The Falcons will now travel to Barstow on Thursday, and will host Barstow on Saturday in Coalinga at 1pm.
