Panthers Hold Off Falcons with 5-2 Victory

Salinas, CA - Head Coach Stefan McGovern and the West Hills College baseball team (0-2) hit the road on Saturday for its first away game of the 2017 season. Hartnell would take the game by a score of 5-2.

In the top of the first inning Trent Bollman got the Falcons going with a single to left field. It was one of Trent's two hits for the day. Bollman stole second with two outs, and was later driven in with a RBI single to right field from Alante Uribe.

The Falcons started southpaw Nathan Voechting on the mound. Voechting would allow three hits and one earned run in his three innings of work, but did allow five walks, which allowed Hartnell to get on the board in the second and third inning. After falling behind 2-1 after three innings, the Falcons went to their bullpen, as Torin Miller came in to pitch. In the bottom of the fourth inning the Panthers added to its lead with three more runs off of two hits and one Falcon error.

Right-handed Falcon pitchers Scotty Ingle and Tondre Neal were able to silent the Panther bats. Both Ingle and Neal went two innings and allowed no hits and no runs.

In the top of the ninth inning West Hills was able to cross one much run. Evan Richards roped an RBI double to right center field that scored Dazohn Gilchrist, who pinch ran for Brandon Barker.

"Our pitching was much improved from our first game, but we still walked five batters and made three errors", said Head Coach Stefan McGovern. "As a staff we competed a lot more in the zone today. We need to clean it up defensively. Our errors put us in too many difficult situations. We need come back on Monday and prepare ourselves for an important week ahead. Hartnell was a very good team with a lot of quality arms, and I feel we gave them too many free opportunities."

The Falcons next game is scheduled for Tuesday, January 31 vs. Gavilan College in Gilory, CA. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
