Falcons Offense Shutdown by Rams Pitching; Lose to Fresno City 7-2

The Falcons hosted Fresno City on Tuesday with a two game conference winning streak on the line. Starter Ryan O'Donnell cruised through the first two innings, holding the Rams scoreless. The Falcons had a big opportunity in the 2nd, as Alante Uribe led off the inning by reaching on an error by Rams third baseman Logan Poisall, and advanced to 2nd on a balk by pitcher Andrew Mitchel. After Torin Miller was hit by a pitch, Preston Riley attempted to sacrifice the runners over by bunting, but bunted the ball back to Mitchel who got the force out at third base. After a pop out by Adrian Flores, Mckay Glines was hit by a pitch loading the bases for Falcons catcher Matt Siedem. Siedem grounded out to 2nd unable to capitalize in the bases loaded situation. Fresno got to O'Donnell in the 3rd, as he struck out the leadoff batter Alec Emerzian but the ball got passed Siedem behind the plate, allowing Emerzian to reach first base. After a balk put Emerzian at 2nd, Evan Steele bunted to third baseman Jake Lorenzini who made a poor throw to first base, allowing Emerzian to score and put Steele at 2nd. O'Donnell hit the next batter, and then induced a popup to get the first out. He then walked Noah Padilla, which loaded the bases. O'Donnell gave up consectutive singles to the next two batters, putting the Rams up 3-0. With 2 outs and runners at 1st and 3rd, O'Donnell balked in another Ram run, giving Fresno a 4-0 lead.

That was plenty for starting pitcher Andrew Mitchel, who cruised through 7 innings, allowing only one run and two hits while striking out 6 hitters. The one run came in the 6th, as Lorenzini led off with a double to left and advanced to third on a groundout by Uribe. Torin Miller hit a sacrifice fly to right, making the score 6-1. Brandon Hutt came in relief in the 7th inning, and pitched well, giving up 4 hits and 1 earned run. The Falcons rallied in the 9th, as they got a walk by pinch hitter Nate Olvera and a two out single by Glines. After a passed ball advanced both runners, pinch hitter Brandon Barker hit a RBI single to shortstop, making the score 7-2. But the defecit proved too much as the Falcons were unable to score again. Mitchel got the win, improving to 1-1 overall, and O'Donnell took his first loss of the season. The Falcons will travel to Fresno on Thursday to play under the lights at 6pm.
