Falcons wrap up regular season with 54-7 win at Gavilan

GILROY – West Hills College Coalinga closed out the 2023 regular season on a positive note, winning its final two contests, including a 54-7 rout at Gavilan College on Saturday.

The Falcons evened up its overall record at 5-5 and ended 2-4 in the Golden Coast League. With the win, West Hills is bowl eligible and learn if it was selected for a postseason game on Sunday.

On Saturday, the Falcons dominated both sides of the field. The offense was credited with 427 yards while the defense allowed just 151 yards. WHCC was up 27-0 at halftime.

Quarterback Jett Garcia had another huge game, tossing 4 touchdowns. He completed 13 of 17 passes for 199 yards, including a pair of TDs to KJ Ford (31, 18 yards), as well as touchdowns to Porter Needs (7 yards) and Brandon Tryon (27 yards).

Gem Boyd also got in on the action, tossing a 30-yard TD to Daniel Nelson in the second half.

On defense, Jermaine McCowin had a 38-yard interception return for a touchdown, Darrise Bridgett and Kirstan Williams both had big sacks, and Xavier Cannady also picked off a pass for an INT.

Special team also played a big role, Darrell Tripline had a 10-yard punt return for a touchdown and Maleik Bradford blocked a field goal.

"It was a total team win from start to finish," said WHCC head coach Justin Berna. "We played a great game yesterday as well as last week. There's still a chance for us to get a bowl game. We'll be crossing out fingers and hopefully we get to play one more game."

Last season, West Hills qualified for a bowl game for the first time since 2016. The Falcons will look to play in the postseason for the second straight year.
