Turnovers doom Falcons in loss to Monterey Peninsula

COALINGA – West Hills College Coalinga had its three-game winning streak come to an end with a 27-13 loss to visiting Monterey Peninsula College in the Falcons' Golden Coast League opener on Saturday.

Turnovers by the West Hills proved costly in the game. MPC picked off six passes and returned three of them for touchdowns, including two in the first quarter. West Hills was down 14-0 at halftime.

Despite the rough start, the Falcons cut the MPC lead to 14-6 early in the third when Gem Boyd connected with Brandon Tryon for a 38-yard touchdown. But MPC came back on the ensuing drive to score a TD of its own to put the game out of reach.

Down 27-6, West Hills added a fourth-quarter touchdown when Jett Garcia hit KJ Ford with an 18-yard pass at the 11:53 mark.

With the loss, the Falcons fell to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the Golden Coast League. WHCC is back in action next Saturday (Oct. 14) to take on Hartnell College in Salinas. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
