The 2023 West Hills College Coalinga football season opener is just days away. And head coach Justin Berna can't wait to see his squad officially in action after the Falcons put together a solid effort on Saturday in a three-way scrimmage at home against visiting Bakerfield and Yuba colleges.

"It was a really good, great scrimmage for us," said Berna. "It was great to see where we are at. We've really improved since Day 1. I think we're definitely on the right path."

Berna was impressed by the Falcons' play on both sides of the ball. Although official stats weren't kept at the scrimmage, Berna was encouraged that his offense scored touchdowns on all four of its possessions while the defense came away with three turnovers, including an interception.

Berna hopes that will carry over into Saturday's (Sep. 2) highly-anticipated season opener at Foothill College. The game is set for a 6 p.m. kick off and will be live streamed by NorCal Sports TV on YouTube. | LIVE STREAM

"It will be interesting to see how the team reacts, playing a ranked team on the road," he said.

These two squads met last year in the Silicon Valley Bowl to close out the 2022 season. Although Foothill came out on top of that contest by a final score of 48-20, it was still a very successful season for the Falcons as they captured a share of the Golden Valley League championship and returned to the postseason for the first time since 2016.

West Hills returns to Coalinga for its home opener on Sep. 9 when it hosts Los Medanos College in a 1 p.m. non-conference game at Memorial Stadium. The Falcons take on Siskiyous (Sep. 30), Monterey Peninsula (Oct. 7), Cabrillo (Oct. 21), and Merced (Nov. 11) at home this season. | 2023 SCHEDULE
