Falcons’ Berna, Gordon top list of 13 All-Golden Coast League honors

West Hills College Coalinga was recognized for an outstanding 2022 regular season. On Monday, the Falcons were rewarded with 13 All-Golden Coast League honors.

Heading the list are head coach Justin Berna and sophomore running back Vondarious Gordon as Berna was named the Golden Coast League Co-Coach of the Year and Gordon took home the Golden Coast League Offensive Player of the Year award.

"Having seven guys named first team as well as getting the offensive player of the year is a big honor," said Berna. 

Berna led the Falcons to their first Golden Coast League championship since 2016 as well as a postseason bowl game. After opening the season with a 1-3 record, the Falcons turned the season around by going 5-1 in league play to earn a share of the league title and a bowl game invitation.

"It's an honor to be regonized but I'm being recognized becuase of how well the team has played," said Berna. "So many people are involved in the success of the program, the players, coaches, and staff."

Gordon is having an amazing second season for West Hills as he led the league with 1,222 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns. His 14 TDs rank second among state leaders while his 1,222 yards rushing are third. He's had five games of 100+ yards rushing. On Oct. 15, Gordon put the offense on his back, running for 233 yards and 4 touchdowns in a win over Hartnell.

West Hills also earned seven first-team All-Golden Coast League accolades as well as four honorable mention selections.

First team honorees on offense included quarterback Jaice Holt, Gordon at running back, wide receiver Dagostino Saintal, and offensive linemen Tristan Valle and Joseph Star.

On defense, linebacker Juan Donoso and defensive back Rusty Finona were named first-team all-league.

Named All-Golden Coast League honorable mention were wide receiver DeQuan Green, defensive backs Julius German and Maleik Bradford, and linebacker Sam Maldonado.

Just one game remains on the 2022 schedule. West Hills will look to go out with a win when the Falcons face Foothill College in the Silicon Valley Bowl on Dec. 3 in Los Altos Hills.
