Delayed 2021 kickoff is finally here, Falcons host Chabot in return to football

Across the state, community college football went missing for nearly two years until a majority of California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) teams returned to action on Sept. 4. For West Hills College Coalinga, that delay went a few weeks longer. Finally, after two COVID-19 protocol postponements as well as a game postponed due to fires, the Falcons are set to take the field this Saturday (Sept. 25) for the first time against the visiting Chabot College Gladiators.

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at the Memorial Bowl in Coalinga. Spectators are allowed, but masks are required. Ticket prices are $5 for general admission, $2 for seniors and kids ages 10-17. Children under 10 years old are free.

Head coach Justin Berna and the Falcons are excited to finally make their return to the field for live competition.

"We are extremely excited about getting on the field and competing," said Berna. "After fire issues and COVID issues our players and coaches are ready to get back on the field and compete against a great opponent in Chabot College."

Chabot enters Saturday's contest with the advantage of already having played three games. The Gladiators are 1-2 overall but are coming off a 23-13 victory over College of the Siskiyous last week.

West Hills and Chabot last met during the 2019 season, with the Gladiators holding on for a 38-31 win over the Falcons in Coalinga. Former Falcons running back Dwan James ran for 165 yards while quarterback William Weinmann threw for 251 yards and tossed three touchdowns.

Following this Saturday, West Hills is schedule to play Siskiyous on the road on Oct. 2.
