Falcons have three named to Academic All-State team

Coalinga College football head coach Justin Berna has always stressed the importance of being a well-rounded student-athlete that is successful on the field and in the classroom as well. Earlier this week, three members of his 2024 Falcon squad were recognized for their outstanding achievements by the California Community College Football Coaches Association (CCCFCA).

Sophomores Trey Cooks, Jackson Emerson, and Porter Needs were all named to the CCCFCA Academic All-State team. To receive the honor, a student-athlete must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and complete at least 36 semester units since their first season of competition.

Needs recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA, Cooks earned a 3.73, and Emerson achieved a 3.51.

"This is a great honor for Porter, Trey and Jackson," said Berna. "They have worked extremely hard both in the classroom and on the field and they deserve this award. They are the true definition of 'student-athlete' and I am very excited to see where they choose to continue their academic and athletic careers next fall."

The trio also hold the distinction of earning first-team All-Golden Coast League honors for their impressive play on the field this past season. Emerson anchored the offensive line, Cooks was the squad's top running back, and Needs led wide receivers in most categories.

The three are expected to sign with four-year programs this spring.
