Falcons wrap up successful season at Grizzly Bowl

ARCATA, Calif. – The 2024 Coalinga College football season came to a close following the Falcons' 37-26 loss to College of the Redwoods in the Grizzly Bowl. The game was played at the Redwood Bowl on the campus of Cal Poly Humboldt in Arcata.

"It was a tough loss," said Coalinga head coach Justin Berna. "We had the lead in the third quarter and felt we had them on the ropes."

The Falcons took a 20-13 advantage into halftime after quarterback Logan Johnson ran in for a 3-yard touchdown with 20 seconds left to close out a 69-yard drive. Johnson had thrown a pair of TD passes to Semaj Wickem, a 14-yarder in the first quarter and a 69-yard bomb earlier in the second.

Coalinga carried that lead into the third, but Redwoods got a 28-yard field goal to make the score 20-16 at the 10:08 mark. That drive seemed to spark the Corsairs' offense as they went on to score three unanswered touchdowns to go out in front 37-20 in the fourth quarter to all but wrap up the contest.

Johnson tossed his third touchdown of the game late in the fourth, connecting with Demarion Wright for a 21-yarder, to close out the Falcons' scoring.

Johnson completed 14 of 31 passes for 240 yards with 3 TD with an uncharacteristic 3 interceptions as well. Jaire Estrada led Coalinga on the ground with 8 carries for 75 yards. And Wickem was the Falcons' top receiver with 3 catches for 99 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Mario Delgado led the defense with 8 tackles. Derrick Taylor had 6 tackles and a sack, Gavin Brady posted 3 tackles with a sack, and both Dylan Green and Tyler Feeley had interceptions.

Despite the loss, the Falcons can look back at another impressive season. Coalinga played in a postseason bowl game for the second time in three seasons. The Falcons finished third in the Golden Coast League at 4-2 and ended with a 6-5 overall record under head coach Justin Berna.

Individually, the Falcons earned 12 All-Golden Coast League first-team honors, led by Johnson.

He closed out one of the finest seasons in Falcon program history by completing 225 of 343 passes for 3,060 yards with 34 touchdowns and just 12 interceptions. Johnson was just as dangerous on the ground as he ran for 291 yards on 80 carries with 11 touchdowns.

Johnson's 34 passing touchdowns ranked No. 3 in the state while his 278.2 passing yards per game and 3,060 passing yards were both fourth in the state.
