PITTSBURG – Quarterback Logan Johnson passed for 399 yards with a touchdown and also ran in for 3 TDs to help lead Coalinga College to a 45-25 non-league victory at Los Medanos College on Saturday.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Falcons and evened up their overall record at 4-4.
"It was a great team win," said Coalinga head coach Justin Berna. "We had to fight through some adversity in the game and we answered the call. The defense held strong and had 5 fourth-down stops while the offense made big plays, converted some big third downs and controlled the time of possession."
Coalinga totaled 500+ yards of offense for the fourth time over its last five games. Johnson had another impressive game as his 399 yards passing was also a new season-high.
The Falcons got off to a slow start but eventually built up a 24-6 lead in the second quarter and went into halftime with a 31-13 advantage.
Coalinga ran for 4 TDs in the opening half, getting a pair of 1-yard plunges from Johnson, a 19-yarder from Trey Cooks, and a 5-yard rush from Jaire Estrada.
Johnson opened the scoring in the third quarter with a 46-yard touchdown pass to Devin Sanchez. Los Medanos rallied for a pair of late TDs but Johnson closed the scoring with his final touchdown run from 3 yards out at the 10:02 mark in the fourth.
Johnson ended his game completing 27 of 34 passes and ran 15 times for 41 yards.
Cooks had 20 carries for a team-high 83 yards. Sanchez caught 4 passes for 104 yards while Khalif Bloome had a season-high 10 receptions for 96 yards.
The Falcons' defense was led by Mario Delgado as he totaled 11 tackles. He also nailed a 29-yard field goal in the first quarter.
Myles Rush was solid with 7 tackles and a sack.
The Falcons now turn their attention to next Saturday's (Nov. 16) Golden Coast League game at Gavilan College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Gilroy High School's Mustang Stadium. A win in that contest and the Falcons would be bowl eligible for the third straight season.
