Falcons battle San Jose City in double-overtime thriller

COALINGA – Quarterback Logan Johnson threw for 377 yards and 5 touchdowns and also ran for 111 yards with a TD but Coalinga College came up just short in an offensive slugfest, losing 50-48 in double-overtime to visiting San Jose City College on Saturday.

"Logan played unbelievable," said Coalinga head coach Justin Berna. "This is one of the better games I have seen him play."

Johnson's outburst helped lead the Falcons to a season-high 570 yards of offense. But San Jose City (5-2, 2-1 GCL) was able to match them score-for-score as the two squads exchanged leads seven times though the contest. Coalinga went into halftime trailing 14-10.

Receivers Semaj Wickem and Porter Needs were Johnson's top targets. Wickem had a season-best 161 yards receiving on 7 catches with a pair of touchdowns while Needs hauled in 11 receptions for 93 yards and 2 TDs as well.

Johnson and Wickem connected for a 27-yard touchdown with just 1:07 remaining in the fourth quarter and along with a 2-point conversion run by Demarion Wright, tied up the contest at 35-35 and eventually sent the game to overtime.

San Jose was able to run for a touchdown on its first overtime possession and kicked the PAT to go up by 7 points at 42-35. Coalinga responded with an 11-yard TD reception from Johnson to Needs as well as a PAT kick to force a second overtime.

On the Falcons' second OT opportunity, Johnson ran in for a 4-yard TD but Coalinga couldn't convert on a the 2-point try leaving the door open for SJCC. Quarterback Will Augenstein tossed a 2-yard TD pass to Riley Anderson and followed that with a successful 2-point PAT run to end the contest for a Jaguars' win.

"It was a heartbreaking loss," said Berna. "Overall, we played a good game against a good opponent but it came down to a few plays and we fell short by two points. The game came down to a handful of plays"

Johnson ended the contest completing 31 of 43 passes for 377 yards with 5 TDs and just 1 interception. He set season-highs in completions, attempts, passing yards, and touchdown passes. His 111 yards rushing and 12 carries were also season-bests.

The Falcons head into a bye week with a 3-4 overall record and 2-2 mark in the Golden Coast League. Coalinga will be back in action on Nov. 9 at Los Medanos College. With just three games remaining on the regular-season schedule, the Falcons still have a shot at a postseason bowl game.

"We're still in control of our own destiny," said Berna. "If we win two out of our last three, we're bowl eligible. If we win all three, we're probably in."
