Falcons drop first Golden Coast League game at MPC

MONTEREY – Coalinga College's unbeaten start to its Golden Coast League schedule came to a close with the Falcons' 38-21 loss at unbeaten Monterey Peninsula College on Saturday.

Coalinga fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter and the deficit proved too much to overcome.

The Falcons twice got within a touchdown of the Lobos (6-0, 2-0 GCL) in the second half but each time MPC was able to respond with a TD of its own.

Quarterback Logan Johnson's one-yard touchdown run at the 11:05 mark in the third quarter cut the Lobos' lead to 21-14. MPC came right back with a 71-yard drive, scoring on a 58-yard TD run by Kieryus Boone to go back out in front by 14.

The Falcons came back to score on their ensuing drive, as Johnson connected with Devin Sanchez for a big 34-yard TD reception with 6:24 to go in the third to once again make it a seven-point game at 28-21.

But Monterey Peninsula grinded out a long 12-play, 84-yard drive that took nearly 7 minutes off the clock and secured its victory with a 1-yard TD run by quarterback Eric Gibson.

Coalinga totaled 337 yards of offense but the defense had a tough time slowing down MPC as they went for 440 yards in the contest.

Johnson had a tough game for the Falcons as he completed 21 of 34 passes for 231 yards with 2 touchdowns but 3 interceptions. He also tossed an 18-yard touchdown to Porter Needs to get Coalinga on the board late in the first quarter.

Trey Cooks ran 16 times for 97 yards and Needs led receivers with 6 catches for 64 yards.

Xavier Cannaday and Mario Delgado both had 7 tackles each to lead the defense.

The loss dropped Coalinga to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the Golden Coast League. The Falcons will look to bounce back next Saturday (Oct. 26) at home when they host San Jose City College in a 1 p.m. league game.
