Falcons score season-high in big win over Cabrillo

COALINGA – Quarterback Logan Johnson tossed 4 touchdown passes while Trey Cooks and Porter Needs both scored twice each to help lead Coalinga College to a dominating 56-14 win over visiting Cabrillo College on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons are 2-0 to open their Golden Coast League schedule and improved to 3-2 overall.

Johnson continued his impressive season with Coalinga. On Saturday, he completed 17 of 26 passes for 276 and 4 TDs with no interceptions. He has thrown at least 3 touchdowns in three straight games and has passed for 200+ in all five games this season.

After Cabrillo opened the contest with a long 69-yard touchdown pass on their first play on offense, Johnson responded with a big play of his own.

Minutes after Cabrillo's TD, Johnson went deep for an 88-yard touchdown pass to Porter Needs to tie up the ball game at 7-7 with 10:17 to go in the first quarter.

That play clearly took momentum back to the side of the Falcons and proved to set the tone for the rest of the game as Coalinga would score 56 unanswered points.

Cooks scored the first of his two TDs on a 1-yard run to make it a 14-7 Coalinga lead after the first quarter. The Falcons blew the game open in the second, putting up 28 points in the quarter.

Johnson threw touchdowns to Cooks (18 yards), Needs (4 yards), and Devin Sanchez (2 yards) to put Coalinga up 35-7 with 52 seconds to go before halftime.

The defense came up with a big play to send the Falcons into the break with an even bigger advantage. On the second play after the ensuing kickoff, Cabrillo's Ambrose Conteh fumbled at his own 36-yard line after the ball was forced loose by Terrell Eackles. Mario Delgado scooped up the ball and ran it back for a touchdown as time expired.

Coalinga went into halftime with a commanding 42-7 lead.

But the Falcons weren't done. Jaire Estrada added a huge 50-yard TD run in the third quarter and backup quarterback Justyn Delzeit connected with Curtis Rodgers for a 60-yard touchdown in the fourth to close out the Coalinga scoring.

The huge offensive game saw the Falcons post season-highs in points (56), total offensive yards (538), and passing yards (353). The Falcons are averaging 39.8 points per game which currently ranks sixth in the state and No. 2 in Northern California.

The defense has been just as solid as of late. The Falcons are allowing just 18.4 points per game, good for the No. 12 mark in the state and sixth in Northern California.

On Saturday, the Falcons' defense forced 3 fumbles, had 2 interceptions, and totaled 2 sacks. Delgado led with 7 tackles in the contest. Derrick Taylor and Michael Johnson had sacks, while Jackson Kissee and Alvin Dean came through with interceptions.

On offense, Cooks ran 8 times for 73 yards and a TD while Estrada had 68 yards on 4 carries with a touchdown.

Needs had a big game, hauling in 5 receptions for 123 yards and 2 touchdowns. Off the bench, Delzeit completed 3 of 4 passes for 77 yards and a TD.

Coalinga has won two straight games and looks to keep it going next Saturday (Oct. 19) when it travels to unbeaten Monterey Peninsula College (5-0, 1-0 GCL) for a 1 p.m. Golden Coast League game.
