MERCED – Quarterback Logan Johnson totaled 5 touchdowns, throwing three and running for two, to help lead Coalinga College to a big 49-6 win at Merced College in both teams' Golden Coast League opener on Saturday night.
"It was a great team win," said Coalinga head coach Justin Berna. "We played a really good game. We were able to dominate all three phases of the game and took control early."
Johnson threw for 325 yards on 21 of 26 passing as part of a season-high 502 yards of offense for the Falcons.
He set the tone early, leading Coalinga on a 6-play, 36-yard scoring drive on the Falcons' first possession. He capped it with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Porter Needs at the 10:23 mark and the rout was on.
Coalinga made it 14-0 in the first after Johnson tossed his second TD, an 8-yarder to Semaj Wickem to close a long 11-play, 90-yard drive. Johnson closed the first by sneaking in for a 2-yard TD run with no time remaining to extend the Falcons' lead to 21-0.
Coalinga came through with a trick play to score their next touchdown. Johnson tossed a backwards pass to Wickem who ran towards the right sideline and threw it into the end zone to find Marcos Ruiz wide open for a 22-yard TD.
The Falcons led 28-0 at halftime and would go up 49-0 in the third after a 6-yard Trey Cooks TD run, a 15-yard touchdown pass from Johnson to Wickem, and another 2-yard scoring run by Johnson.
Merced (0-4, 0-1 GCL) finally broke up the shutout at the 11:50 mark in the fourth quarter with a 2-yard touchdown run by Hudson Wyatt.
The huge day on offense for Coalinga wasn't just limited to Johnson. Receivers Devin Sanchez and Needs both went for 100+ yards as Sanchez had 5 catches for 104 yards and Needs caught 5 passes for 103 yards and a TD.
Wickem hauled in a pair of touchdowns while throwing for one. He ended with 5 receptions for 40 yards. Ruiz, the recipient of his touchdown pass, had 4 catches for 58 yards.
On the ground, Cooks led with 88 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown.
Defensively, Mario Delgado had 10 tackles to lead the Falcons. Coalinga got sacks from Joel Ngoma and Terrell Eackles while Bryon Peterson picked off a pass for an interception.
Coalinga will look to keep the momentum going next Saturday (Oct. 12) when the Falcons host Cabrillo College in a Golden Coast League game. Kickoff at Memorial Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
