YUBA CITY – Coalinga College scored early and often while the Falcons' defense was just as impressive in a 49-6 non-league win at Yuba College on Saturday.
Coalinga scored on eight of its 10 drives in the contest on its way to its first win of the season. The Falcons were forced to punt just once while their final drive of the game ended as the game clock expired with the squad in victory formation.
"It was a great team win," said Coalinga head coach Justin Berna. "We started fast scoring on our first two drives and never looked back offensively. Defensively, we wanted to make them one dimensional and shut down the run game. We were very successful allowing only two rushing yards for the game."
Quarterback Logan Johnson had another solid game in leading the Falcons. He tossed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Devin Sanchez on Coalinga's opening drive while his two-yard TD run with 32 seconds left in the first gave the Falcons a 14-0 lead.
Yuba got its lone points in the second, striking for a 67-yard touchdown pass at the 14:48 mark.
But from that point, it was all Coalinga.
The Falcons pounded the ball on the ground, getting a pair of rushing touchdowns from Jaire Estrada, as well as one each from Trey Cooks and Demarion Wright.
Jude Sosky hauled in an eight-yard TD from backup quarterback Justyn Delzeit late in the fourth quarter while a Coalinga safety credited to Nathaniel Stroud on Yuba's final drive of the game closed out the Falcons' scoring and secured the win.
"We had a lot of great individual performances," said Berna. "On offense, Cooks, Estrada, Wright all scored, Cooks had over 100 yards, Sanchez had a great game at WR and Logan Johnson had another great game at QB."
Cooks ran 19 times for 106 yards with a touchdown while Estrada rushed for a pair of TDs and 50 yards on 10 carries. Wright totaled 21 yards on 10 carries with a TD.
Johnson threw for 218 yards on 10 of 16 passing with a TD and no interception. On the ground, he ran 7 times for 33 yards and a touchdown. Sanchez led Coalinga receivers with 3 catches for 92 yards and a TD.
"The defense was led by Derrick Taylor and Brandon Darden on the defensive line with Mario Delgado also having a good game at linebacker. The defensive backs had a great game with Xavier Cannaday and Amir Jones shutting down their big play wide receivers."
Coalinga, now 1-1 overall, is back in action at home next Saturday (Sep. 28) when the Falcons host De Anza College in a 1 p.m. game at Memorial Stadium.
